Saturday 1 May 2021 – 7.30pm St Luke’s Church, Remuera
Sunday 2 May 2021 – 2.00pm St Luke’s Church, Remuera
NZ Barok is excited to be venturing into new territory as they are joined by a team of 8 vibrant singers to present Vivaldi’s beautiful Gloria - sopranos Jayne Tankersley and Rowena Simpson, altos Helen Acheson and Jessica Wells, tenors Jack Timings and Sid Chand and basses Chalium Poppy and Alex Matangi.
As well as this, NZ Barok presents the vibrant and sonorous baroque string music you are used to hearing from them. Imagine you are in Rome and Venice as the gorgeous sounds of Corelli and Vivaldi fill St Luke’s Church on Saturday 1 May 2021 at 7.30pm and Sunday 2 May 2021 at 2.00pm.
The concert opens ‘in Rome’ with the celestial sounds of Arcangelo Corelli - the father of concerto writing. His concertos for strings inspired composers across Europe including the flamboyant Venetian priest Antonio Vivaldi. The ‘Red Priest’ wrote over 500 concertos, many for the orphaned girls at the Ospedale della Pietà, many sacred works, and 40 operas.
NZ Barok has chosen two of Vivaldi’s most inviting, cheerful, and contrasting concertos as the build-up acts for Vivaldi’s emotionally rich and sonorous Gloria, a work for singers and instruments. The Gloria will be presented in the second half of the programme. With moments of festive brilliance to profound sadness, it is one of classical music's most uplifting choral works.
