John Sinclair - Lessons from European Open Prisons: Can we do the same in Aoteoroa?
In 2011, John left a long and varied career as a policy analyst in central government to train as a yoga teacher. He teaches yoga in prisons, co-ordinates in-prison volunteer programmes for the Howard League for Penal Reform, and is the Chair of the Yoga Education in Prisons Trust.
John will be at St Luke’s to tell us what he learned last year when he visited European prisons on a Winston Churchill Fellowship. He will give us some inspiring examples of community organisations working closely with prison staff to create prisons truly focussed on helping prisoners make good, rather than just serve time.
This is the fourth in a five part series that looks at alternatives to the punitive and costly strategy of incarceration in use in New Zealand today.
