Our History - in Print
In This Place - From This Place
St Luke's Presbyterian Church, Remuera - Newmarket 1875-2022
This well illustrated book explores the rich and varied history of St Luke’s since its beginnings in 1875. Among the recurring themes are the theological and liturgical emphases of its nine ministers; the outstanding leadership of ministers and lay leaders; reasons for the rise and decline of work among children, youth and young adults; the growth and demise of women’s groups and the development of shared leadership by women and men; St Luke’s shift from an evangelical, mission-oriented church to an inclusive, liberal, progressive community.
"A fascinating story of a church community expressing human courage and frailty, sadness and joy, but above all, generous compassion for others and for the world we live in. Allan Davidson moves deftly through the decades, tracing the emergence of a progressive contemporary church which, while honouring its more conservative history, looks to the future with intelligence, humour, and hope. Excellent women – and men – abound!"
Alexa Johnston, author of Sir Edmund Hillary:An Extraordinary Life.
